Dreamland
By Alison Drewett
I’m thrilled to share my latest, and largest, collage “Dreamland,” inspired by the stunning Art Deco building in Margate! My journey to creating this piece began last month at the wonderful Contemporary Collage Live event, where I was delighted to find a vibrant colour book nestled in my goody bag. This marvellous resource is jam-packed with 96 pages of pure colour, all printed on high-quality 90gsm silk paper stock. It turned out to be a complete game-changer, guiding the style and energy of my artwork in ways I never anticipated!
Over the past couple of years, I’ve created a collection of collages depicting local landmarks in an iconic Art Deco style. However, bringing this collection to life has been a labour of love, requiring considerable time and effort to source the perfect magazine pages filled with bold blocks of just the right colours. Thankfully, the colour book helped streamline this process considerably, allowing me to dive straight into the creative flow!
To give the collage an authentic touch, I roamed the streets of Margate, collecting free local publications that beautifully reflect the community. Adding these papers to the collage doesn’t just enhance the piece; it also celebrates the area’s rich culture.
You’ll find 'Dreamland' at the entrance of the upcoming MAHL exhibition at the Pie Factory Gallery in Margate, where it will serve as a warm invitation to explore my main collection, “Painting with Scissors” further back in the gallery. This collection draws inspiration from the breathtaking North Kent coastline, and I can’t wait for you to come and see it in person! www.mahl.co.uk
